Reddit went into a spin recently when fast food workers spilled the beans on the dishes you should never order. Amid the stream of $1 oysters, mystery deli salads and American chains, the Daily Mail zeroed in on one item that’s familiar to Australian diners: McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish.
Comprising a steamed bun, a deep-fried tile of fish, tartare sauce and half a slice of cheese, the poor ol’ filet doesn’t get a lot of love and that, apparently, is why you should change the way you order it.
One Reddit user said, “It's been three years since I worked there, but I can promise you that Filet-o-Fish is not fresh by any stretch of the imagination.”
As the filet is one of the less popular items on the McDonald’s menu, it’s slower to move than its beefy cousins. Anyone who’s worked at Macca’s will tell you there are strict rules around when food should be thrown out – 10 minutes after it hits the heat lamps – but the former employees claimed it may get a little lax during busy or super-slow periods.
The good news is that there is a solution for Filet fiends, according to a Reddit user: “Just say you want a fish filet cooked to order. It will take around five more minutes but worth it compared to the Filet that has been in the heated cabinet.”
Another suggests there is an optimum time for filet ordering, saying. “The only time you can trust a Filet-o-Fish is at 10:30 am. That's when they switch to lunch, and everything is fresh for 10 glorious minutes.”
And while we’re on the subject of cooked-to-order McDonald’s creations, why not follow the lead of Melbourne burger lover Jimmy Hurlston of Jimmy’s Burgers, who orders his quarter pounder buns steamed, rather than toasted, whenever he visits the Golden Arches.
Australian food and travel writer Sarah Lewis refuses to queue for breakfast, which is just as well, as she’s rarely out of bed before midday on weekends. Instead, you’ll find her trawling Melbourne’s laneways for negronis and late-night ramen (often followed by a cheeky McDonald’s cheeseburger on the way home).
